No Light Town Update – February 2022 2nd Half, March 2022 1st Half

Projects I’ve Been Working On – No Light Town – Development Log

Note: Progress over the past few weeks has seen some slowdown, due to dealing with some personal projects at home. Some spring cleaning and re-organizing around the house needed to be done. With those projects done, it was full steam ahead with the game project and more sprite work.

February 18th – Found another asset pack that looked really well done. The Lonesome Forest: Retro Tileset # 1 by ElectricLemon. The forest design is really good and could have some potential for New World Saga.

February 24th – Finally finished the sprite for the Howler monster. Its the first actual monster you can fight in the game, so it was good to finally have this sprite design down.

  • Made sprites for the big roaches that appear in the game and the Kawagaroach boss fight that happens early on. Basically, I worked off of the side view battler graphic I had already made to make the design fit, then went from there.

February 25th – Reworked one of the tree sprites I had been working on to make the sprite for the Treant sprite boss. Made a couple of different 96×96 sprites for the Treant waking up.

  • Found another asset pack with potential for The New World Saga. This time, its the Edinnu: Stone Cemetary pack by rowdy41. Figured some of the gravestones could be useful or at the very least give me ideas to draw my own.

February 26th – Two more asset packs found today by Gif. The RPG asset battler pack of Super Retro World has some interesting monster designs, while the RPG asset character pack from Super Retro World could help with coming up with more unique designs for townspeople and more important NPCs.

March 1st – Returned to work on the Drumbo Posse Sprites. Figured I could some tweaks on these designs to make them better and more in line with the main character sprites.

March 2nd – Two new asset packs by brullov caught my attention. The Oak Woods – Environment Asset had some great tree designs while the Generic Character Asset v 0.2 had some good-looking character movements. Been debating about making a side scroller style game at some point, so this could be good inspiration for movements in that project. One project at a time though! Gotta keep focusing on the top-down RPG.

March 8th – Came across an incredible bundle, The Bundle for Ukraine on itch.io. Its a fundraiser containing almost 1,000 different games, books, music and game assets, while supporting the International Medical Corps and Voices of Children, providing medical assistance in Ukraine and supporting children as the invasion by Russia continues. If you don’t make games, but like playing them, there’s plenty of games in this bundle for you to enjoy. The game design assets are also good and could have potential for my project, I just have to go through them first.

March 9th – Finished the Flame Soul sprite. Made three versions of it to reflect different states of the creature in the meetings with it. Was debating whether I would use an oversized sprite for the Flame Soul or stick with a traditional 48×48, but the oversized sprite just seemed more menacing.

This sprite got its start from a mushroom person that Guardinthena had designed and posted on the RPG Maker web forum. While their content is free for commercial and non-commercial use, credit for the starting point is due. Be sure to check out their other sprites on the RPG Maker Forum, they are really good.

March 11th – Finished off two versions of the Flame Soul Side view battler design. Still got one more version to finish, the one set on fire. This is will be a boss fight with alternating forms, based on moves done by the player.
