More pictures taken on the road recently, as I left the art desk and computer behind for a little site scouting.
I’ve been working on the ideas around the battlebacks for The New World Saga. Essentially, the backgrounds and foregrounds that are used for every battle in the game.
Originally, I was debating on simply using what was available in the game engine. However, I’ve found some of these backgrounds not fitting some areas where battles take place in the game’s storyline.
So here are more pictures I’ve taken from the region and others I’ve dived into from my past to put to use. My train of thought was to take the pictures and use them as inspiration for drawings later.
Here’s some of the places I took pictures of (Note: I’ve taken out some identifiers from the pictures, like location names on buildings, license plates, etc.)
There are a few other pictures and back drops I am looking at for battlebacks in the game, but more on those later.
Also keep in mind that some of these battleback ideas probably won’t make the final cut of the game. Some of these double up on the same kind of setting, so they aren’t really needed. They just give multiple ideas for the same kind of setting.
From there, I sat down with these pictures (and some other ideas) and started sketching out some Battlebacks. You can see those sketches below.
And from there, I started to finalize and color backgrounds. I was able to sketch nine of these over two days, but it took three whole days to finalize just one Battleback, which is pretty insane when you think about it.
That was the Forest Clearing drawing. The first area a battle will take place in The New World Saga.

For the record, there is still a TON of work to do if I want to create and include my own battlebacks. Its absolutely nuts, but we’ll see what comes of it. I’m not in any hurry to get this done and I’ve got the patience to work on a project like this.
