Here’s the latest from the sketchbook for the game.
I picked up some new art books recently, so some of these creatures are based on trying out some new ideas from that.
I’m also working to begin filling out some of the monsters that appear beyond the first section of the game. At this point, The New World Saga is looking to be a game of about 15 sections, with the demo currently in the works covering the first section of the game.
Two of the robot characters are intended as a boss for a side quest in Section Two. Their names are Helper Robo and Support Bit. These two are meant to act similar to the Guardian and Bits boss seen in Chrono Trigger, where the larger robot is the main boss and the other two give support.
The Dire Wolf is also meant for a side quest in Section Two or Three. This is actually my second attempt at drawing this guy. My first draft looked okay, but was kind of janky compared to some of my other drawings. This one has the same tough feel as the previous attempt, but is more streamlined and gets the look across better.
The bear is exactly as it says on the tin. A bear. Likely will be one of the enemies living in the highland areas, although I might treat it as an enemy you are supposed to run away from. I mean, IT IS A BEAR.
The large lizard is a neat design and I have an idea for a side quest for it, but I’m not exactly sure where I want that to happen in the game yet. My train of thought is either the community of Paris or underneath Duncan’s Castle. We’ll see what happens as we go through development.
The little collared guy is another second attempt drawing and one that is going to add quite a bit to the game’s main story surprisingly. Originally I planned the collared pet as a side quest, but liked the storyline I drafted so much, I upgraded it to a mainline quest character. Sometimes I’m surprised what ideas come to mind as I’m drawing these characters.
A similar story could be said for The Blacksmith of Bright and Dark, only in reverse. I knew I wanted to get into a quest about elemental weapons at some point and that quest eventually got upgraded to a mainline quest event. So with that, I knew had to draw a blacksmith for that quest, but with its increased importance, I wanted him to look as cool as I possibly could. That led to the design seen below.
Finally, lets talk about the fire hydrant. The Fire Robo was a request from my wife after she saw the drawing of the Helper Robo. She wanted me to draw a fire hydrant like that. That request ended up turning into a bit of a reference to an old cartoon from the late 1960s called Here Comes The Grump. Think he’ll be a joke enemy in the Helper Robo’s lair.
“Gotta put the fire out out. Gotta put the fire out.”

A fun addition to the storyline, maybe?
