Site Scouting for Battlebacks – Part One

I hit the road yesterday and left the art desk and computer behind for a little site scouting.

I’ve been working on the ideas around the battlebacks for The New World Saga. Essentially, the backgrounds and foregrounds that are used for every battle in the game.

Originally, I was debating on simply using what was available in the game engine. However, I’ve found some of these backgrounds to be lacking and not fitting some areas where battles take place in the game’s storyline.

So I did a little tour of the region, taking pictures of areas I felt would make a good backdrop for these battles. My train of thought was to take the pictures and use them as inspiration for drawings later.

Here’s some of the places I took pictures of (Note: I’ve taken out some identifiers from the pictures, like location names on buildings, license plates, etc. That’s the only things I’ve changed with these pictures.)

Still have some more background ideas I would like to find, like alongside a river or lake, in the middle of mountainous terrain and inside a busier city. I’d also like to get a farm field with haybales in the background. Have to see what else I have to work with and go from there.

Also have to figure out where the heck I’m going to get a picture of a quarry, a cave or a mine to work with.
