The Howler was one of the earlier monsters that I drew for The New World Saga and surprisingly one of the tougher ones to nail down the visuals for.

First off, I will admit that the creature looks a little janky. To be honest, I was going for that with making it. The Howler is actually the first enemy in the game that you encounter and so I was comparing it to say goblins or kobolds in other games.

So essentially you have a creature that clearly looks like a monster, that is not meant to be considered much of a threat and well… looks like it would be more of a dumb beast as opposed to a sentient creature.

And so the result was this.

Shortly after making it, I realized the Howler kind of looked like another monster I know from other games, the Koopa from Mario Bros or a Kappa from Japanese myths.

So for some fun, I decided to re-draw the creature for a variant to make it look like everyone’s favorite Koopa King. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to use this picture for an enemy in the actual game, but here you go!
