There’s no shortage of characters in The New World Saga and every single day, it seems like new character ideas are coming out of the ether to be worked on.
Today, I focused more on giving form to several character ideas I’ve had for villains. These include early game bosses and simple enemies met in random encounters.
Out of all of these, I really like how the Creep and the Bog Waddler turned out. The Bog Waddler came from a monster that an very brief, one second appearance in the old She-Ra cartoon from the 1980s. It had a unique design and I wanted to build on that in the form of this monster. I feel this could have a good place as a monster you want to avoid while in Ontario forests or swamp, like a bear.

The Creep is one that took a surprising turn. Originally, I thought the Creep was going to look similar to the Centaur monsters from the Fallout series, but I started doing some initial sketches and didn’t like that idea. I had already dived into the creepy side for monsters a couple weeks back, so I didn’t want to go that way yet. Plus, if anything looking like the Fallout Centaurs was simply wandering around the Southwestern Ontario countryside, I’m pretty sure they would be hunted to extinction.
So I took a different approach. I knew I wanted the Creeps to be mischievous and sneaky, basically getting into sheds and garages and stealing things. So I thought along the lines of like a raccoon or a fox. That being said, I didn’t want to go like a Tanooki or a multiple tailed fox, as both those ideas have been done to death.
At that point, I started thinking of the Carbuncle monsters from Final Fantasy and kind of blended that idea with a normal fox. The drawing below was the final result.

The Slime Scraper monster turned out really well too. Once again inspired by old 1980s TV shows and movies. This one took inspiration from the old cartoon She-Ra and blended that with the look of the monsters from The Gremlins movies. He looks great, but I have no idea what I want to do with him yet aside from a random encounter. I’m sure the idea will come in time.

I also drew a random Spider and took some time drawing the Quarry Gang Boss, one of the first real bosses of the main game. I always wanted him to be a big and tough character, kind of like Tohru from Jackie Chan Adventures or an old-timey wrestler. This was the result.
Also, a bit of a side note, I hate drawing normal human feet. I don’t know what it is, but I can never seem to get a shoe or boot to look right.
